Guatemala, or the Republic of Guatemala (in Spanish: República de Guatemala), is a Central American country that shares borders with four nations: Mexico, Belize, El Salvador, and Honduras. It is bordered to the northeast by the Caribbean Sea and to the west-southwest by the Pacific Ocean. It is the third-largest country in Central America by area, but it is the most populous. It is also part of Latin America. In 2024, Guatemala has a population of over 17.85 million.
Its national currency is the quetzal, named after the sacred bird, whose long tail feathers the Maya used as luxury items. In fact, Guatemalans say that the Maya used the feathers not only as luxury items but also as currency. This is believed to be the origin of the currency’s name.
