Honduras, formally known as the Republic of Honduras, is a country located in Central America. It ranks second in the region in terms of both land area—just behind Nicaragua—and population—after Guatemala.

It shares borders with three countries: Guatemala to the west, El Salvador to the southwest, and Nicaragua to the south. It shares its longest border with Nicaragua, a significant portion of which follows the course of Central America’s longest river, the Río Coco.

Like Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama in Central America, Honduras has coastlines on two sides. It is bordered to the north by the Caribbean Sea, which includes numerous islands, cays, and islets, the most important of which are the Bay Islands and the Swan Islands, while to the southwest, it has a small opening to the Pacific Ocean via the Gulf of Fonseca.
