Montserrat is a small Caribbean island located within the Lesser Antilles archipelago in the eastern Caribbean Sea. It is a British Overseas Territory with a parliamentary system, in which the executive branch is led by a Prime Minister. The head of state is King Charles III, who is represented by a governor appointed by the British government. It is often described as the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean, due to its resemblance to the coast of Ireland and the presence on the island of descendants of Irish settlers, who were among the first European colonists.
The inhabitants of the island are known as Montserratians. However, the term “Stratians” (pronounced “Strashans”) is commonly used by the population.
