   The Dominican Republic is a country located on the island of Hispaniola, in the Greater Antilles archipelago, in the Caribbean region. It occupies the eastern part of the island, sharing a border with Haiti, making Hispaniola, along with Saint Martin, the second island in the Antilles to be shared by two sovereign states. The Dominican Republic is the second-largest country in the Antilles by area (after Cuba), with 48,671 km², and the third-largest by population, with approximately 10.8 million inhabitants, of whom about 3.3 million live in the metropolitan area of the capital, Santo Domingo. The country’s official language is Spanish.
