El Salvador, formally known as the Republic of El Salvador (in Spanish: El Salvador and República de El Salvador, respectively), is the smallest country in Central America, with a total area of 21,041 km² and an estimated population of 6,328,196 in 2014, making it the most densely populated country on the American continent with over 300 inhabitants per km². With a tropical climate, the country is bordered to the west by Guatemala, to the northeast by Honduras, and to the south by the Pacific Ocean, which is its only coastline (a unique case among the landlocked states of Central America). Administratively, El Salvador is divided into 14 departments and then into municipalities. San Salvador is the capital and its largest city, far ahead of Santa Ana and San Miguel, which are the other major cities.
