Trinidad and Tobago is an island nation in the Caribbean located in the Caribbean Sea, off the coast of Venezuela. It has been independent since 1962 and, as of 2024, has a population of approximately 1.4 million Trinidadians.

A member of the Commonwealth, the country’s official language is English; Trinidadian Creole, with a French lexical base, is in decline. Its capital is Port of Spain.

Trinidad and Tobago consists of two main islands 35 km apart: Trinidad and Tobago, with Scarborough as its capital. Other smaller islands make up the rest of the republic’s territory.

In 2015, Trinidad and Tobago had the third-highest GDP per capita in purchasing power parity in the Americas, behind the United States and Canada. Its economy relies primarily on the oil and petrochemical industries, thanks to the country’s large hydrocarbon reserves. Its currency is the Trinidad and Tobago dollar.
